A Fine Line between a Career and your Passion

Head shot of Postgraduate alumni talking about her success on the course

Ever wondered what you get when you mix fashion design, a business degree, super sharp operational management and bucket loads of creative energy?

Answer: an entrepreneurial event manager running her own events design agency.

We managed to catch up with alumna Dionne Antrobus, Director of Fine Line Events. We wanted to find out how life is going after she completed a Diploma course with us in 2013 and we were lucky to get a moment to chat. Between her business taking off and her love of travel this lady is going places!

“I wanted to be a fashion designer as I love the research process, bringing ideas together and visualising unusual designs.”

However, after securing a placement working with a couture fashion designer, Dionne spent days hand sewing roses on to designer dresses. It was at this point that she realised that the reality of working in fashion wasn’t all she aspired to be.

“I’ve always wanted to run my own business, since I was thirteen or fourteen.”

With unerring aim, Dionne chose a business degree and studied at Birmingham to ensure her aspiration to run her own business could become a reality. She completed her studies with flying colours (as you may have expected) and then went on to land a job at Accenture, where she worked her way up, proving that she has a business head on her shoulders, as well as a creative drive.

The part of her job she most enjoyed while at Accenture was organising corporate events for her clients and colleagues. Event planning was something she did on top of her day job, little did Dionne realise it may become her calling.

“My first business venture was a piñata business, to bring the colour and excitement of piñata celebrations back from my travels in Mexico.”

As well as a business degree, a stint as a fashion designer and a successful career at Accenture, Dionne has also found time to go travelling. She spent a year travelling across Latin America and drew inspiration from her travels to set up a new business.

While building up her piñata business, Dionne realised just how much the event planning side of the job called to her. She decided to take an event management course with us to learn about the full range of event planning, taking her well beyond her corporate experience.

“What? You mean people get to design luxury weddings and events as a job?”

As a part of the Event Academy network, Dionne stayed in touch with Justine (our Course Director). It may not sound glamorous, but Dionne took on events waitressing in London after spotting a job opportunity emailed to our alumni. Looking back she believes it is one of the best choices she made in building up her career.

Dionne got to know London’s top venues, worked at the Brit Awards and learned to identify the best caterers London offers. When she worked with a luxury catering and events company, everything fell into place. The successful business model for Dionne’s own venture was suddenly clear and the rest, as they say, is history!

“It’s a Fine Line ..."

Fineline Events, a business built on solid experience in the corporate sector with precision planning and high fashion inspired design principles was born. All Dionne’s interests, including her love of travel, languages and exploring different cultures come into play in her business and her branding. It is truly an expression of her personality and what she loves about her life. And she gets paid by her clients to do it.

We wish Dionne huge successes in 2016 and the years that follow! Merry Christmas and a Happy New year to all of you out there, wherever you are on your journey of discovering your unique talents.
