Finding out how an events career has really taken off!

"I attended some fantastic Red Bull events in France, that’s the level of event I want to run"

So how did Nick decide he was shooting for global events and international clients? He’d worked in production, stage management, lighting and also been on the stage as a performer. Nick has toured a lot and worked on cruise ship, so with his 10 years of experience he knows the entertainment industry inside out. He wanted to use all this experience, to have a job with plenty of variety and to work with household name brands.

Events and marketing seemed like a natural progression, but he didn’t want to spend 5 years studying at Uni to get qualified: Nick needed something quick and practically useful. That’s when he found our website and started looking at our short, practical courses.

"As soon as I started this job, I went out to France to work on a Facebook event"

Talk about flying into the role … not only was Nick offered a job at Innovision Events as soon as he finished the course with us, he was sent overseas for an event within a couple of weeks!

Nick says he used all the skills he learned with us to land his dream job. He learned a whole bunch of stuff that was completely new to him, despite his previous experience in the events industry. Pitching events is one of those things you have to just get stuck into and no amount of talking about it will give you the skills. He got to work in a team to develop an event concept, polish it and then pitch a wow-factor idea to a client. If you can master how to do that, you’ll always be popular in the events industry!

"If you’re moving from the other end of the world, you have to have a clear plan!"

Nick is still following the career plan he made before he booked on the course with us. He’d been applying for jobs while studying to get things set up. He finished the diploma exam and went for the interview for his current job a few days later. Then he started the job.

It’s obvious Nick has the passion and ambition to make it big in the events world. He’s come all the way from Australia to follow his career dreams of working in the events capital of the world, London, on those global events he’s inspired by. What’s his advice for anyone who wants to get into event management?

“Go for it! I could still be sitting at home now and not taking any risks and not getting any further. Also know that for every success, there is loads of work behind the scenes and I had applied for loads of jobs before I got this one. Take the risk and just go for it!”
