Snap decisions

I decided to join the course 2 days before it started!

Denise worked in events for 6 years at the London Borough of Newham. She left that job to follow her passions and pursue a degree course in English, yet after several years away from the world of events, she was missing it terribly.
So what do you do if you want to get back into events? Denise googled events courses, found that we had a Diploma course starting in 2 days and booked on it! Just like that, a career change decided in just a few days. Like most event managers, when Denise has her heart set on something, she reaches straight for it. Do you see that in yourself already or would you like to be someone who isn’t afraid to take the plunge and follow their dreams?

It’s all about the people on the day, seeing happy faces and getting to see what makes us all unique.

Denise decided to reboot her career in events because ‘1. I miss the spontaneity that events brings. No two events are ever the same. 2. I tend to throw my all into each event. From the concept brief to the excel spreadsheet of attendees, to the calls / emails with attendees prior to event to finally getting to meet them on the day and seeing the smiles on their faces as what was a ‘dream’ finally becomes a reality… It really does makes all the hard work behind the scenes worthwhile.’
One of her passions is to organise memorable awards ceremonies for children and young people.
She is motivated by creating an amazing celebration to show others how much they’re valued. Anyone can tell you that event managers like working with people. When we tell you Denise is a people person though, we think of the way she puts her whole personality into creating an amazing experience for her guests: she loves seeing people happy. If you want to do your best work, you need to be doing things you love and Denise proves this perfectly. She says:
“So many of us are still on a quest to find out what we were born to do and yet our passion usually lies in the things we do naturally without even realizing.”

I would NEVER have considered setting up my own company before taking the eventcourse.

So why did this dynamic, confident person who already knew she loved events take the course with Event Academy? Simple: she wanted to learn more about the wider industry. She knows it’s a competitive world out there and while she was already confident, she knew she could boost her confidence with more experience. She learned about pitching an event to clients and practiced it for the first time through the eventcourse.
Denise found the group work on the course invaluable. She had never worked in a group to create an event during her time at local government – she mostly only had her own skills to rely on. She discovered that working with a group with different personalities allowed each member to grow in areas they had never tried before, and as a result, boosted each other’s creativity. Since finishing the diploma, she’s started planning how to start up her own events business (Gravitas Events) like her career role model Liz King. She told us that she was originally intimidated by the word ‘manager’ in the job title ‘event manager’ and now she wants to run her own business!
If, like Denise, you want to boost your career in events why not have a look at our courses? Or if you want to find out from Denise herself or one of our other alumni what it was like, why not come to one of our open evenings? Come and chat to lecturers and past students to find out about the possibilities for you in events.
