Successful student shares her experience

Last updated July 16th, 2013

By Rachel Verralls: Event Academy student who graduated successfully from the September 2012 Postgraduate Diploma in Event Management
“After meeting Course Director, Justine Kane, at a graduate fair in London, I knew that I wanted to do a Postgraduate Diploma in Event Management. After studying business with marketing at university I knew I wanted a job that involved doing something different everyday. I did not want to be constantly in an office.  I had also worked as a waitress at weddings before and attended many music events so really wanted to know what it would be like working on the other side of the events business.
“I started the Postgraduate course in September 2012 and instantly knew it was the right decision! We were taught a range of events from fundraising, fashion, festivals and corporate…all from very experienced professionals from the event industry.
“It was also a great way to start building a network. I made sure that I got involved with as many volunteering opportunities as possible, as I had never worked on big events before and I knew I would need these to make my CV stand out.
“Through the Event Academy I volunteered to help at Tedx Brighton, “We Are Peoples” Film Festival for the United Nations, SEO Awards Dinner and even the Brit Awards.
“As part of the course we also completed a three month work placement. I had a one to one meeting with Justine to discuss where I would be most suited within the industry and then we approached the relevant partners.  I attended an interview with the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign as I had been interested in working for a charity. I started the internship in January and I have loved it here!  At the start everyone was so friendly and I was given lots of work to do. Working here got me straight into the events industry and I was given a large amount of responsibility and event experience.
“After two months of volunteering at the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign I was offered a three month  job as the Challenge Events Assistant, where I took over the London Marathon. It was one of the best experiences I have had,  although I was extremely nervous as I only really had three months experience in the events industry.
“I was then offered the role as an Events Officer, my first ever full time job and it was time for me to kick start my career in events management!
“I now work on a range of events including special events and challenge events, which include the Microscope Ball, Spirit of Christmas, Cycling Portfolio, Town and Gown series and my main project is the London Marathon!
“With the London Marathon I recruit over 100 runners, build a relationship and support them throughout their training and fundraising. I then make sure that we show our appreciation on the day by organising a Post Race Reception and cheering squads along route.  I am now really looking forward to working on an event from the start to finish.
“If it wasn’t for the Event Academy I feel that I would not have this job as it completely opened my eyes to all different types of events and helped me to start my career. I am so glad that I was able to be a part of the course and I am now in a job that I enjoy and I’m gaining a large amount of events experience.
“I am also still able to follow my dream of working at music events as this summer I am off to Croatia to work at Outlook and Dimension festival for two weeks as a senior volunteer.
“I would recommend this course to anyone looking to kickstart their career in events!”
