"The secret of getting ahead is getting started"

This quote from Mark Twain feels very relevant at this time of year. As we all look out into 2014 from a cold, dark corner of January the problem is not the dreams or good intentions… but just getting started. Many of us will have new year’s resolutions. Some of them will be about getting fit, eating less, being more adventurous, climbing a mountain or walking a new path…but many of them will remain just that…resolutions. We will never even get started.

It is the same with our careers. For those who feel stuck in their search for a job we have at least a glimmer of light in the shivering dark. Event management training might not be the obvious choice but let me help you understand why it could provide you with a way of getting ahead (and beyond) this year.

The events industry globally is growing and by events I don’t mean parties. Events cover everything from product launches, brand experiences, festivals, sports, fashion and music, charity, guerilla and virtual marketing experiences, conferences, exhibitions, summits and expos, cultural, educational events…and of course the usual array of weddings, funerals and bar mitzvahs.

As the emerging nations spend more on private and corporate events so the more established economies attempt to balance the shift to digital with live, face to face, ‘people centred’ experiences.

Within this dramatic growth in the volume and spend on events, is the need for individuals and teams who are professionally trained and have the confidence and experience to carry off their creation, direction and production. Clients and sponsors are not prepared for the event to be anything other than a measurable success, and increasingly these experiences are providing a strategic function within a broader mix of marketing, PR and digital activity.

So the world of events is big, diverse, increasingly well paid and growing. If you have the slightest inclination to organising things, to being efficient and creative, to loving the real and the live as well as the visual and the digital…then this could be the career for you.

Personally, I came out of film production and into events by chance and I have never looked back. What I loved about film I love even more about events. There is something intensely exciting about a live experience, be that in the theatre or at an event. You cant beat it, paticularly when you are responsible for making it happen and creating this feeling for many others in a shared setting, where anything can happen and often does.. then you are really alive!

So if this appeals to you…just get started and either give us a call or have a look at our Postgraduate, Diploma or Foundation courses. Also have a look at some of the other courses and training that is available out there.

Our postgraduate courses in event management run in March and September and last for 6 months, 3 months of which is intensive experiential training at the Business Design Centre in London and 3 months of which is a placement in an organisation of your choice (99% of the time we can make that work!)

Most of our students go on to take full time roles in these organisations or associated companies. Our last postgrad course which finished just before Christmas was for 50 students, all of whom are now placed. What better chance can you find to bridge where you are at now and the opportunity of being part of one of the world’s fastest growing industries…and certainly one of the most dynamic, fun and diverse.

I wish you the best with wherever you are at. Personally my resolution involves a lot more exercise and a lot less consumption. But it also includes a commitment to be involved with at least two live experiences a week. Lets put the laptop down and get out there in the real world.
