Hannah’s Perfect Placement

Hannah was working at a ski resort, life was fun but she knew that this wasn’t a career path for her. She needed direction and was struggling for ideas….

It wasn’t until her friend asked for her help in planning her wedding, she got a taste for organising events. It never occurred to her it could be a career until she looked into it and found The Event Academy!

“The thrill and excitement of planning events became addictive and I knew I needed to get a qualification to succeed in the industry, which is why I chose to study event management but I wanted the best course.

I knew that uni wasn’t for me and I wanted something that was quick and would enable me to start work in the events industry as soon as possible.”

The Event Academy seemed the obvious choice as not only did it offer a complete course progressing from Level 3 to Level 7 – the highest qualification – but also a three month industry work placement.

Hannah soared through her Degree Alternative course and started preparing for her work placement.

Despite there being hundreds of top companies to choose from, Hannah had her heart set on one placement…Bovingdons Catering.

“I’m currently working at Bovingdons, one of the oldest and most prestigious event companies and I am learning so much more that I didn’t know.

Bovingdons host at venues including Fulham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Nonsuch Mansion & The Cutty Sark – it’s incredible!

I love working on the events themselves, you get to see how the whole day runs from when the client arrives to how happy they are when it all finishes.

I use a lot of what I learnt from the projects in my placement from how to create a day planner and itinerary of how the day will run, to the basic use of spreadsheet and budgeting – the placements were basically mini roles of what I do now in my placement.

The course has taught me a great deal about the industry and in my opinion, much more than if I went to study event management at University. The course has given me the experience and knowledge to work and move up the ladder in the events industry.”

Hannah is part of our amazing team who have accumulated over £125,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust!

Hannah finishes her placement at the end of September, and will also find out whether they will offer her a full-time role.

“I think the Event Academy is an excellent course and would recommend to anyone who knows they want to work in the events industry and get as much experience as possible. Amazing lecturers, and overall a very good course!”

“Without the Event Academy Diploma course I would never have gotten to where I am today, this gave me the knowledge and support I needed in order to get a job in the events industry and it also gave me great connections that I will take with me throughout my career.”

Overview

Our goal is to provide the best event training courses available and prepare our students to achieve meaningful careers.

We do this by teaching students, not only how to design and deliver successful events, but also how to pitch, interview, work in teams and manage people. We call this being ‘work ready’. It’s what the industry requires from us and it’s what we love doing. To date, over 2,000 students have passed through The Event Academy and over 90% of our level 7 graduates are employed in the event industry 6 months on from graduation.

Our Degree Alternative enables those with little or no previous event management experience or qualifications to graduate with a level 7 Postgraduate Diploma (accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing) within 12 months. Working your way through the Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced stages of the Degree Alternative, you will receive personalised mentoring throughout your journey to prepare you for each stage.

Course Modules

At each stage, you will progress through Core Modules of event management and Key Subject Modules, developing broad knowledge and understanding of all event sectors. You will receive a range of support to aid your personal development along the way. Assessments come at the end of each stage and help prepare you for the next level of learning.

Placement

Your Degree Alternative will culminate in a work placement with an events company or agency of your choice. This is a guided process from start to finish.

Your work placement is an incredible opportunity to apply all the skills and knowledge you have learned in the classroom and demonstrate your value to a prospective employer. It gives you real-life working experience as an event manager to add to your CV as well as helping you to better understand where you see yourself going in the event industry.

We help you to prepare your CV, teach you how to do your very best at the interview and advise you on the type of placement company we believe will suit you best. Through a series of one-to-one meetings, we match you to the perfect opportunity to suit you and your ambitions in the industry. We keep in close contact with you throughout the whole process.

Throughout your course you will also be able to take advantage of the many volunteering opportunities exclusively available to Event Academy students.

We also provide a comprehensive mentoring programme including

  • 3 x 1 hour meetings, either in person or via skype
  • 2 x 15 minute phone calls
  • Personal performance reviews
  • Setting targets
  • Personal guidance through the project phase

You’ll graduate into our alumni network, comprising over 2,000 fellow event professionals, movers and shakers in the industry globally.
