Julia’s Journey from Basel to New York Fashion Week

Julia was working in fabrication for a small company in Basel before making a decision that would change everything!

“I’m Julia, a 23 year old Swiss / Australian living in London. I was born in Switzerland and grew up in Adelaide, Australia.

In 2008 my family moved back to Switzerland and I did an apprenticeship in Administration & Service for a Swiss Cosmetics Company.

During my apprenticeship, I worked in PR & Events for over 1 year and discovered my passion for events.”

Why did you choose the Event Academy?

I was searching for a further education in events in Switzerland but didn’t find anything that blew me away. I then expanded my search and found the Event Academy in London, flew out with my dad and went to an open evening where I fell in love with the course. To make sure that I was fully prepared for life as a full-time Event Manager, I continued travelling and gaining more experience before enrolling.

What were your favourite 3 things about the course?

I made so many friends from all around the world. I was a little bit anxious about joining the course, but they eased my nerves and they are all now great connections.

I went on to organise the live event for Project 4 which was absolutely amazing. I lead a team of 15 people and I feel as though I really proved myself as a leader.

Lastly, I always felt very supported by my lecturers who really helped me to have confidence in my abilities.

Where are you working now?

I am an Assistant Producer at My Beautiful City. My Beautiful City is a full service creative agency that offers end-to-end support across art direction, concept creation and event production. I love it!

My job is to materialise the creative design of the event and make it come to life. I love seeing the final product, after all the hard work that goes into producing an event.

After the course, I genuinely felt prepared before starting my placement and knew what everyone was talking about in the office. I definitely learnt a lot about communicating within a team, due to the team rotations in all 4 projects. I also understand how a budget works and how to prepare yourself and your team before going on site.

If you look back how do you think doing the course has changed your life?

The course completely turned my life upside down…I fell in love with my job, London as a city and decided to move here permanently.

It gave me the opportunity to get my foot into the world of events and I don’t think I would be where I currently am without the kick start of the Event Academy.

Julia will soon be embarking on a trip to New York with the event that she’s been working on with New York Fashion Week

Doing a course at the Event Academy is one thing but using your initiative and pushing your limits is another.

If you fully commit to a job in events and prove yourself you will get amazing results – I worked very hard for a project over the past few months at My Beautiful City and now get to go to New York to actually pursue the event itself.
