Is There A Need To Study Event Management Training For 3 Years?
Last updated June 11th, 2012
During consultations with potential students on
our courses I’m often asked whether I see value in doing a University course in Event Management. My honest answer is that I don’t see the value in studying an event course for a 3 year period. Although certain areas within events are academic, the nature of events are that they are experiential…and consequently event management training (as far as possible) should be a practical, hands on, intensive experience. This should only take 6 months max.
These are my reasons for doing an intensive course in event management training:
• 3 years is a long time. If you are serious about launching your career in event management then undertaking a degree course of 3 or 4 years will not only delay you entering the work place but will be extremely costly. With the rise of student debt this could cause you untold problems and financial stress during your formative years as an event planner.
• Events are largely practical and fast paced. We encourage students to get involved and start ‘doing’ right from the start and putting into practice everything they learn in the class room. The Event Academy offers voluntary experience (and sometimes paid experience) in areas such as:
Awards ceremonies, Global sporting events, Festivals, Corporate hospitality, Charity fundraising galas
• The real value we bring is building your confidence by learning the basics in the formal sessions and then following them up in a placement. A placement will allow you to put into practice all that you have learnt and develop yourself so you become a valued employee. The vast majority of our placements go permanent or at least result in a fixed-term contract. We have built a very strong bank of contacts in the events industry that allows us to place you in the best opportunities available.
Examples of placement sectors are Wedding Planning, Festival Planning, Private Parties, Fashion Events, Sporting Events, Corporate Events, Fundraising Events, Event Management Production, Venue Management
It’s simple. If your aim is to launch your career as an event manager then why waste time in getting there!
I’d really like to hear your views on this – do you agree with me?
