How to have it all: travel and career prospects

Last updated July 13th, 2015
As we ease into summer and the conversation turns to holiday plans or holidays just gone, we’re all dreaming of seeing the world and getting into the wide blue yonder. For anyone at the beginning of their career, or contemplating career change this can be a fantastic time to go and take some time out and do a proper travel stint. You know, like you’ve always promised yourself and never yet managed.

What stops people from travelling or from seeking a job that involves travel?

There are obvious constraints like parenthood and financial considerations. More likely to stop you than these, however, is an anxiety that somehow you’ll lose your place in the flow of career aspirations and that competitive edge you need to stay on top of the job market. Sometimes it feels like you can’t stop and take a breather for a minute or you’ll lose whatever advantage you’ve worked really hard to gain so far.

Include what you REALLY aspire to into your life

If you want to travel and ease your wanderlust, there are no shortage of reasons why you should. Those with a broader cultural experience tend to perform better at interview and to have better developed transferable skills. How about combining travel with training for your next career move? You no longer have to drop your career in order to travel. We are increasing our offer of our online courses so you can do your training while you pursue your other life ambitions, leaving you with the competitive edge you need to fly into a rewarding career. As a trainee event manager, the skills you’ll be learning will also be highly applicable to wherever you travel. Event management is related to marketing, entertainment management, community project management, fundraising and charity roles among others. All these are great areas to look for volunteering or short term paid opportunities while you travel. Event management is also a great way to pursue a career involving travel in the long term if that is what your heart desires. The same industries listed above offer jobs that can take you all over the world. Your event management training will be your passport to head out and never look back. So instead of sitting and waiting for your 2 weeks in the sun to see and doing new things, why don’t you think about how you can spice up your travel diary and sharpen up your career prospects while you do it?
