We love following people who make our jaws drop with what they’ve achieved and Eurovision 2014 winner Conchita Wurst definitely held our attention over the last 12 months. Wurst (the performing persona of Tom Neuwirth) was thrown into the spotlight after her performance at the Eurovision Song Content finals, the most watched non-sporting event in the world.
We’re always thinking about career building and how to create the right opportunities to shine and do what you love, as this is exactly our mission for our students. So what is it we love about how Eurovision’s 2014 winner has built her career since that life changing night?
Since then Conchita has carved a phenomenal career for herself as recording artist, an icon for Europe’s LGBT community (including speaking at an anti-discrimination event at the European Parliament) and presenter for Eurovision 2015. She attracted severe criticism from parts of the international community for her stage persona, yet she has used this to become a powerful spokesperson for diversity and tolerance.
Speaking about her desire to perform for the LGBT community in Moscow in 2014, denied by city officials, she said
“[I wanted …] To tell them that they are not alone. The whole community around the world is standing behind them. They have to trust that if they open their mouth, then we can change something.”
As if all that weren’t enough, she piques our interest from an event management point of view. As winning performer of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2014 and now presenter of the show in 2015 she is the face of one of Europe’s biggest and most internationally conspicuous events. It is like the Brit Awards magnified about 100 times.
Following the events theme, Conchita is now the face of the 2015 Life Ball, having modelled for the event’s Gustav Klimt inspired poster. The Life Ball in Vienna is Europe’s largest charity event and event managed each year by charity organisation AIDS LIFE to raise funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS sufferers.
See a video below about the creation of the poster as a key PR activity for the Life Ball to ensure the event gets the recognition it deserves. Is this something you can see yourself doing as an event manager, constantly looking for creative ways to promote events that support amazing causes?
We were especially excited about last week’s Life Ball (Saturday 16th May 2015) as we helped one of our students secure a prestigious volunteering opportunity at this high fashion and fancy dress themed event. Proof that you should always think big and dream big: you never know where your career in Event Management could take you. All the students, volunteers and alumni we speak to tell us that the buzz of being part of a big event is unbeatable and is what makes the career so rewarding.
We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to pursue their own ambition and dreams, regardless of their background. In an interview before the 2014 Eurovision Song Content Neuwirth asserted that the inclusion of the beard as part of the Wurst character was
“… a statement to say that you can achieve anything, no matter who you are or how you look.”
We completely agree with the sentiment and it is always a good time to take steps towards finding your dream career.
