Student Life 2020

You've left school but this is definitely not what you were expecting! So how do you decide what to do next and when?

Everyone has so many questions and are wondering what studying this September will be like? We're here to try and help you answer them.

Where will I study and how does it work?

Virtual classrooms will be your home to start the academic year: September – December 2020 moving into London for 2021. Here is our current course schedule.

What Is A Virtual Lecture Really Like?

We understand that virtual lectures is a new way of studying for many students so we wanted to give you some important facts.

All of our virtual courses are live streamed – not pre-recorded.
You will be in a virtual classroom via the Zoom app.
You can interact with the lecturer to ask questions or respond to their questions.
You can talk to other students and work together in virtual break out rooms on projects.
You will have a moderator who can help with technical queries or general questions.

I am worried that the course won’t feel the same.

It’s important you stay safe at the moment and we follow government guidelines but you will still get all the benefits you get from studying in a classroom in a virtual format.

Group projects, run real events and go on virtual site visits to venues.
121 contact with Course Directors & Lecturers.
Gain valuable connections to build your industry contacts.
Pastoral support from the Student Services team.
Make friends through the course and have a laugh along the way.

How does this course help me to get a job?

We know that the competition to get a job is going to be fierce. The biggest selling point of our courses is that they give you real life practical experience and the work placement is a key part of that journey but there is so much more.

Get real practical experience of creating events
Learn how to answer real life client briefs and pitch back to them
Start to build your industry contacts by meeting guest lecturers and real life clients
Go on virtual site visits and learn how to recce a venue and build your event plan
Get practical experience volunteering and build your CV
Obtain an industry work placement for three months

Are there any benefits from studying virtually?

Many students we talk to have not considered learning in a virtual classroom but there are definitely some other things to consider.

Save money from travelling or living in London
Learn how to run virtual events
Learn how to work within a team with people in different places
Rewatch lectures in your own time
Learn with us from anywhere in the world

Our team can help answer anything you are unsure about from funding to course content. We can help.

What is the future for events?

We are already seeing event planners and managers across the globe using this opportunity to flex their creative muscles and rise to the challenge of continuing to create ways for people to interact together. Some of our favourite virtual events…

Balmain
Fashion brand Balmain headed by Oliver Rousteing achieved a social distanced fashion event by instead of having a runway, using the top deck of a boat to showcase his new collection. The event called Balmain Sur Seine was in the heart of Paris marked the 75th anniversary of the French label and gained huge press attention. Staged with live music and and choreographed dancers plus of course the models, the event was streamed on social media and witnessed by a stunned audience of surprised Parisians on the banks of the river.

The London Original Print Fair Online
The illustrious LOPF has been taking place at the Royal Academy of Arts since 1985, drawing established art collectors and first-time buyers alike to peruse and buy original prints from across five centuries. Celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, event organisers decided to simulate the experience of the Fair with tips and advice, virtual Viewing Rooms and themed online exhibitions, navigated via an interactive map.

Tomorrowland – Around The World
“Tomorrowland 2020 is a place that allows you to celebrate intensely, where you can share your emotions and unite with People of Tomorrow from all around the world.” Quite a big statement but because the festival is virtual, they have secured some huge artists including Katy Perry. Plus we are promised a visually exciting experience as a festival that is also renowned for their immense stage constructions promises a “Tomorrowland location (that) can never be entered physically. Rather, the experience comes to you. This will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so prepare to write history together. Never before did the People of Tomorrow unite this way. Never before did people form all around the world feel this close.”

Virtual RHS Chelsea Flower Show
This annual highlight of the horticultural calendar, the RHS created an online virtual Chelsea Flower Show to help keep gardeners entertained at home. From tours of the private gardens of leading designers and florists to daily ‘school gardening clubs’, there was plenty to get excited about.

What does the industry think?

The Event Academy places students with a wide variety of venues, agencies and event companies for work placements – we spoke to a few of them to get their thoughts.

Simon Lockwood, Creative Director, The Brewery, London The Brewery has enjoyed a long and fruitful partnership with the Event Academy. We have welcomed many students to the venue over recent years, and always find them to be enthusiastic, talented and well prepared for the challenges presented by live events. We look forward to a full recovery of the industry and continuing our relationship into 2021.

Sasha Cullen, ex Head of Weddings. The Savoy London
Special occasions will always happen, either virtually now or live in 2021. Lockdown has emphasised how much people miss social interactions, celebrations and enjoying the moments so if anything next year is going to be the biggest party year ever! Weddings are like births, they can’t be cancelled so we are literally going to have two years worth of weddings in one.
