Backstage at an Event Venue

Last updated November 13th, 2015
Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at spectacular events venues, the bits of the building you don’t normally get to see as a guest? Or how to choose a venue to create the perfect space for your event? To prepare our students to hit the ground running in their first event management role we take them on regular site visits. Our Director of Education, Claire, is proud of the fact that our students get a no holds barred venue visit, meaning they get to see everything that an event manager might need to know about.

Glitz and glamour

Would you like to poke around the Grosvenor House Hotel in London? Our students get to explore this Park Lane hotel with 31 different rooms for events, the largest of which holds 2000 people. Obviously, we’ll explore the beautiful ballroom with its sparkling chandeliers and the many suites hired out for events. Behind the scenes though, we also take our students round the kitchens, the serveries and the store cupboards. The size of the cold goods store cupboard at the Grosvenor House has to be witnessed. Students have described it as “the size of a small continent”!

Put your training in to practice

As our students learn in classroom about how to put on an event, how to plan the theme, catering, décor and people management letting them loose on a real venue lets them see what they’ve been learning applied in the real world. The reality of the space the venue or events management team have to work in, walking the tiny back stage corridors, the distance between servery and dining tables all give an event manager a valuable insight into what will work and what won’t.

Competitive edge

If you’ve been behind the scenes at some of the best London venues, seen how the front of house and the back rooms work and spoken with the venue staff who support the events team, you’ll know what to expect when you start your first job. We give our students that competitive edge by already knowing what they are walking into. It makes that first job a lot less scary and means you can really impress your new employer or your first client. It also makes it much easier for you to work with the suppliers you’ll need as an event professional. By knowing the environment the venue sales team, catering staff or production team work in, your job will be much easier. There’s a lot more to good event management training than sitting in a classroom.
