First Job

Getting your first role in the events industry can be tough if you don't the right experience or connections - or can it?

I want my first job to be one which allows me to fulfil my potential - even if I don’t know what it is yet!

Wouldn’t the world be great if everyone felt motivated and passionate about the work they do? Of course it would so here at Event Academy we’re trying to change the world one student at a time with event management courses which allow you to explore your potential whilst developing the skills you need to enter a fast-moving industry which offers the same kind of limitless potential as you do.

This was certainly the case for our Postgraduate course alumni Victoria Smart, who came to Event Academy without a firm plan for her career, but an ambition to gain experience, opportunities, and confidence – and she succeeded with all three whilst studying on the course.

Employers don’t want me because I don’t have experience, but how can I get it when I don't have a job?

If lack of experience is the reason you’re missing out on your first job or capping your potential for promotion in the job you have, then we’ve got good news for you! Event Academy courses are designed around giving you on-the-job event industry experience so that by the time you complete the course, you’ve bridged all those experience gaps: in your CV, your knowledge, and your practice!

What’s more, you’ll also come out of it with a CIM accredited qualification, a whole portfolio of evidence to show prospective employers, plus confidence which not only helps you to really sell yourself at interviews – but also to stand out as a professional event manager!

This combination certainly helped alumni Molly, who studied our Postgraduate course after finding herself unable to get a job in the fashion industry, due to her lack of practical experience but has now gained a permanent professional events role in London – and career confidence!

I haven’t studied for a while. How can studying events help me to get over my ‘first job’ frustrations?

Studying event management with Event Academy is likely to be very different to other learning you’ve done: because all of our courses are based around hands-on experiences – firstly, learning from our lecturers and other industry-leading experts; then by putting what you’re learning into practice, through live event projects, volunteering opportunities and even work placement, depending which course you choose.

Our teaching model is all about putting into practice the very best industry practice, right from the start, across all aspects of event management. This model of study not only helps to get you work-ready but can also help reduce those ‘first job’ frustrations – and can even present job opportunities through work placements and volunteering.

Certainly, this experiential-learning model was one of the reasons alumni Lucia Beltrame chose our postgraduate course in order to get her career started as, despite having an M.A and a CV of unpaid and voluntary work, what Lucia really needed was some hands-on experience of event management!

Of course, we also realise that returning to learning at a specific location or with a full-time commitment isn’t always convenient, so we also vary the ways you can study – Live courses here in London, part-time or through online courses which deliver the same, fully accredited qualifications but in ways which fit in with your life!

My CV looks so empty - how can taking an event management course with Event Academy help with that?

When it comes to applying for first jobs, it’s understandable that your CV may have more space than detail, but an event management course with Event Academy can have an impact on every part of your CV:

  • Qualifications: our courses offer Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM)  – accredited qualifications, which are well respected in the events and marketing industries. Employers tend to notice this!
  • Experience: successful completion of our courses provides you with a wealth of experience which you can detail across your CV – for instance, your experience of event planning, pitching to clients, negotiation, budget-management, marketing and event evaluation. Studying event management with Event Academy means your experience will expand – in person and on paper!
  • Competencies: those experiences are successful because of the skills and competencies you’ll be developing ‘on the job’. Studying through ‘live’ project management means building professional practice and developing vital skills for success – something potential employers will be looking for.

It’s this overall impact which really helps our students build confidence as well as a CV which showcases those skills. This was certainly something alumni Charlotte found when studying our Diploma as a route into a career in events:

“[…] I’ve certainly rounded my CV really rounded, so I work in marketing and the moment and it’s given me another string to my bow. It’s also made me more confident in pursuing interviews and other options.”

I’m interested, but what if I need:

  • To gain professional skills quickly? From start to finish our Postgraduate course takes just six months: three of full-time study and three of full-time work placement – so in less than a year you could be working as event professional thanks to a CIM-accredited Event Academy course.
  • An introduction course, to help me find out about the event management industry? Our Foundation Certificate course offers an intensive introduction to the events industry, so you can find out if your graduate career lies in events.
  • Flexibility in how I study? Check out our online courses or our part-time Diploma course.
  • The excitement of studying events in London? Our live courses all take place in London.
